Set on the Alabaster Coast in Normandy, Étretat is famous worldwide for its dramatic chalk cliffs. From our stays in the heart of the village, here is everything you can see and do — most of it on foot.
The must-see: the Aval cliff, its arch and the famous hollow Needle made legendary by Maurice Leblanc. Walk up the path to the top for an unforgettable view, then carry on to the Manneporte. On the other side, the Amont cliff and its Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde chapel overlook the bay. Sunrise and sunset here are magical.
Étretat's pebble beach stretches between the two cliffs. Stroll along the seafront, admire the old caloges (fishermen's huts) and enjoy the cafes facing the sea.
The coastal path (GR21), voted "most beautiful GR in France", runs along the cliffs. A few kilometres are enough to link up superb viewpoints toward Bénouville or Yport. Wear good shoes and stay cautious near the edges.
Overlooking the sea, the Étretat Gardens blend contemporary art with sculpted topiaries. An original visit, ideal in fine weather or under cloudy skies.
At the Clos Lupin, the former home of Maurice Leblanc, step into the world of the gentleman burglar — a perfect outing for families or rainy days.
Explore the Alabaster Coast: Fécamp and its Bénédictine Palace, the cliffs of Yport, Le Havre (a UNESCO site) and, a little further, Honfleur. Golf lovers will enjoy the clifftop Étretat golf course.
Étretat is worth visiting all year round: soft light in spring and autumn, a lively atmosphere in summer, dramatic cliffs in winter. It is about 2 hours from Paris by car. As central parking is limited in high season, it is best to stay within walking distance of the cliffs — like us.
To make the most of Étretat, stay in the heart of the village. Royal Étretat offers three charming stays in a 19th-century villa, steps from the cliffs: Royal Rose (with parking), Royal Perle and Royal Amis. Book direct →
